{"id":1302,"date":"2014-01-09T18:23:49","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T17:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ceec.it-meal.net\/history\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T11:44:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T09:44:01","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ceec.be\/en\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en--><b>1974<\/b> \u2013 After a conference held in Belgium on the theme \u00ab\u00a0<i>Catholic Education and Tomorrow\u2019s Europe<\/i>\u00a0\u00bb Monsignor Alfred DAELEMANS, Director of the National Secretariat of Catholic Education in Belgium (SNEC-NSKO) invites some of his European colleagues to create together a permanent Committee of European Catholic Education, also assuming the role of secretariat of the Catholic International Education Office (OIEC) for the Region Europe. This Committee does not have its own general secretariat but is integrated to the Belgian secretariat. Founder member countries: <b>Belgium<\/b>, <b>France<\/b>, <b>Germany<\/b>, <b>Italy<\/b>, <b>Netherlands<\/b> and <b>Spain<\/b>. <b>1975<\/b> \u2013 Organisation of a conference in Torhout (Belgium) on \u201cParticipation in Education\u201d. <b>1976<\/b> \u2013 A first Secretary General, Baudouin du BUS de WARNAFFE, is appointed.\u00a0 The name European Committee for Catholic Education (CEEC) is adopted. CEEC, as a de facto association without legal personality, elects its first President: Mr. L.A. STRUIK, from the Netherlands. <b>1977<\/b> \u2013 In January, the first European working programmes are presented at a congress held in Strasbourg (France): \u201c<i>European Reality<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>Education to Environment<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>Education to Migrant Children<\/i>\u201d and \u201c<i>Education and Employment<\/i>\u201d. The study of these topics continues to 1980 in various working groups who present their conclusions in colloquiums and seminars, generally held in Brussels. <b>1978<\/b> \u2013 <b>Ireland<\/b> is joining the CEEC. The European Organisation of Parents of Pupils in Catholic Education (formerly called OE-GIAPEC and today CEPEC) becomes an associate member of CEEC. <b>1979<\/b> \u2013 <b>Denmark<\/b> is joining the CEEC. \u00a0 \u00a0 <b>Beginning of the 1980s<\/b> \u2013 Mgr. DAELEMANS succeeds Mr. STRUIK as President of CEEC and a new Secretary General is appointed in the person of Raf DE ZUTTER who has a great experience in the associative world. The CEEC secretariat leaves the building of Belgian Catholic Education and moves to nr 42 rue de l\u2019Industrie in Brussels. <b>1981<\/b> \u2013 CEEC organises a conference in Rome on the theme \u201cEvangelization and the School\u201d. <b>Portugal<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>1984<\/b> \u2013 Organisation of an Academic Session in Belgium for the 10<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of CEEC and starting of the \u201cNetwork of Catholic Schools\u201d, a partnership project between Catholic schools of various member countries. Three <i>European Youth Forums<\/i> will be organised in this framework in Palma de Mallorca, Spain (1985), Torhout, Belgium (1989) and Aubenas, France (1994). <b>1989<\/b> \u2013 <b>Hungary<\/b> and <b>Switzerland<\/b> are joining the CEEC.\u00a0 \u00a0<b>1991<\/b> \u2013 <b>Poland<\/b> and <b>England &amp; Wales<\/b> are joining the CEEC. <b>1992<\/b> \u2013 The <b>Czech Republic<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>1993<\/b> \u2013 The Presidency of CEEC is still assumed by Belgium where education is now communautarized. So the Presidency is assumed in a rotational manner by Canon Andr\u00e9 DE WOLF (VSKO, Flanders) and Canon Armand BEAUDUIN (SeGEC, French-speaking sector). <b>1994<\/b> \u2013 Academic Session for the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of CEEC. <b>Greece<\/b> and <b>Austria<\/b> are joining the CEEC. <b>1995<\/b> \u2013 Etienne VERHACK (former Headteacher of Jan-van-Ruusbroeckollege in Brussels, a school participating in the CEEC Network) is appointed as Secretary General. He takes up his post in September in a new office located nr 19 Avenue Marnix in Brussels. CEEC is now an international non-profit association with legal statutes. <b>Slovakia<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>1996<\/b> \u2013 <b>Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina<\/b>, <b>Lithuania<\/b> and <b>Romania<\/b> are joining the CEEC. 1999 \u2013 European Colloquium in Brussels on \u201c<i>The Education Policy of the European Union and the Catholic School<\/i>\u201d. <b>Norway<\/b> is joining the CEEC. \u00a0 <b>\u00a0<\/b> <b>\u00a0<\/b> <b>From the 2000s<\/b> \u2013 Under the impulse of the Secretary General, CEEC develops its contacts with the European bishops responsible for Catholic schools within the Council of European Bishops\u2019 Conferences (CCEE), and with the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome. <b>2001<\/b> \u2013 Congress in Rome on the theme \u201c<i>The Mission to Educate: Testifying to a Hidden Treasure<\/i>\u201d. <b>2002<\/b> \u2013 <b>Croatia<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>2003<\/b> \u2013 Meeting organised in Bensberg (Germany) with the European bishops responsible for Catholic schools, on the themes \u201c<i>The Mission of the Catholic School and the Place of Religious Education<\/i>\u201d and \u201c<i>Freedom of Education<\/i>\u201d. <b>2004<\/b> \u2013 The CEEC Presidency is entrusted to France, represented by Mr. Jean-Pierre GARDY. <b>Ukraine<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>2005<\/b> \u2013 Conference organised jointly with the bishops of CCEE, in Rome, on the theme \u201c<i>How can the Church best support the formation of teachers and the development of leaders for Catholic schools?\u201d<\/i> <b>Scotland<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>2006<\/b> \u2013 Seminar in Bratislava (Slovakia) on the \u201c<i>Spiritual Leadership of the Headteacher<\/i>\u201d: starting point of a study on the formation of lay people working in Catholic schools, which CEEC will be carrying out for several years. <b>Slovenia<\/b> is joining the CEEC. <b>2008<\/b> \u2013 Conference organised jointly with the bishops of CCEE, in Rome, on the theme \u201cThe Catholic School in the European Public Area\u201d. <b>2011<\/b> \u2013 Starting of the working theme \u201cChristian Formation and Spiritual Accompaniment of Teachers in Catholic Schools\u201d: study developed in three years with presentation of a synthesis in Brussels in April 2013, and exchange with the bishops at the Sarajevo Congress in May 2014. <b>Sweden<\/b> is joining the CEEC and <b>Albania<\/b> becomes a partner. <b>2012<\/b> \u2013 Mrs Dr Christine MANN, Director of the Austrian Secretariat of Catholic Schools, becomes the first woman who assumes the CEEC Presidency. The European association of Former Pupils of Catholic Schools (UNAEC-Europe) becomes an associate member of CEEC. <b>2013<\/b> \u2013 In September, Guy SELDERSLAGH, also Director of the Study Service of SeGEC, succeeds Etienne VERHACK as Secretary General of CEEC. The secretariat moves and is now located in the building of the SeGEC, nr 100 Avenue E. Mounier, Brussels. <b>2014<\/b> \u2013 Conference organised jointly with the bishops of CCEE, in Sarajevo (Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina) on the theme \u201c<i>The Personal Christian Formation and Spiritual Accompaniment of Catholic Teachers in Schools<\/i>\u201d. <b>2022 \u2013<\/b> Louis-Marie PIRON, formerly France&#8217;s representative on the CEEC, succeeded Guy SELDERSLAGH as the new Secretary General of the CEEC. He is also General Delegate within the General Secretariat of Catholic Education in France (SGEC).<strong> 2024<\/strong> \u2013 In November, more than 22 member countries gathered in Strasbourg for the 103rd General Assembly of the CEEC. The European city for our biannual meeting was not chosen by chance, as this special edition was an opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our European Committee for Catholic Education.
